Friday Mar 12, 2021
Liana Semchuk, Lead Analyst for Europe & Eurasia, and James Barth, Analyst for North America, join Director for Sibylline EMEA Jonathan Dunbar, to discuss tensions between the US and Russia increasing since Joe Biden became president of the United States. The risk of US sanctions against Russia expanding remains elevated in the months ahead as bipartisan pressure on Biden to take a tougher stance on Russia mounts. However, Washington may be forced to make compromises on its Russia stance concerning key infrastructural projects such as Nord Stream 2 as the Biden administration seeks to mend ties with Europe, particularly Germany. Further strains to the US / EU-Russia relationship will also come from Covid-19 vaccine disinformation allegations, cyber threats, and Washington's promotion of democracy in Eastern Europe.

The 17 January warnings made by Chinese Ambassador to Canada Lu Shaye exacerbated the deterioration in relations between the two countries. The incident adds to the recent attention given to relations between the US, Canada, and China.
In this podcast we break down the areas of concern between the countries into three different categories: the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou and resulting fallout, ongoing Sino-American trade negotiations, and US-driven national security concerns regarding Chinese companies. After analysing these three categories, we give our predictions on how they will evolve, and highlight associated risks to Canadian and American companies and individuals.
Key points include:
- Analysis of the relationship between the scrutiny of Huawei, ongoing trade negotiations, and concerns over espionage and intellectual property theft
- Implications for US and Canadian travelers and operations in the China
- Predictions regarding US government policy and oversight regarding Chinese firms in the coming months

Over recent months, the tensions between the US and Turkey have escalated, notably in the form of bilateral trade sanctions.
In this podcast we look at why this is occurring and what the main drivers are, both superficially and under the surface. We identify that the harnessing of nationalist and even religious sentiment in this situation is causing popular anger towards the US within Turkey, as demonstrated by the recent drive-by shooting of the US embassy. We also look at the broader risks to the business environment in Turkey in the coming months.
Key points include:
- The latest iterations of reciprocal tensions
- Key drivers, internationally and from each side
- Predictions on how this will evolve over the coming months
- Red flags and indications of severe escalation
